Anybody can do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - it can be highly addictive and incredibly rewarding. But the only way to find out is to try it!
For Gi classes, we wear a Gi, a traditional, heavy-duty kimono. For No Gi and submission grappling we wear a compression top and shorts.
For your first classes you can wear anything you would normally wear to go to the gym.
We would also recommend bringing a towel, some water and a pair of flip fops/sliders for wearing if you need to go off the mat to the bathroom.
No prior training or experience is required, and starting jiu jitsu is a great way to guarantee getting into shape, doing something you will find fun and rewarding.
Any form of athletic style T-shirt and shorts are fine (although make sure they are clean..!)
Your nails must be trimmed to prevent injuries to your partners
Make sure you don't have any contagious skin infections (common cases are staph, ringworm and impetigo).
Optional: Message us to let us know you're coming!
Introduce yourself to the instructor
Tell them it is your first session
Inform them of any pre-existing injuries or health conditions
Enjoy the training, they will take care of the rest :)
Either fill out an interest form or call/text/email/message inquiring about membership. You can also get in touch via Instagram.
We recommend a BJJ Gi. Judo Gi's are also fine but are typically noticeably thicker. Karate or striking martial arts uniforms won't be suitable as they are usually too thin to withstand gripping and will tear.
Any colour is fine, most common options are white, blue or black.
We recommend checking online to find a good deal. Tatami Fightwear has a large number of options in stock and is often discounted on sale.
If you're unsure about sizing, feel free to ask the instructor at the class or send us a message!
There are many specialist BJJ rashguard sellers, the easiest and most cost-effective option is often to wear a non-grappling specific compression top (short or long sleeve). Under Armour, Nike or Sondaco from Sports Direct are all good options.
For shorts, any sports shorts without pockets, zips or hard metal are ideal.
Some people also opt to wear spats or compression leggings under their shorts.
Unfortunately not at the moment, although we may in the future.
